Wooden model of the Delft City Archive facade. The relief of the facade was inspired by an artwork of Jan Schoonhoven, a Delft artist who is widely known for his rhythmic paper reliefs with intricate plays of light and shadows.

Recently, I started working with a new paper, that of all its qualities affecting the way I think about and approach my work, is its appearance: cool white. Earlier in my IG timeline, I compared the white of Piet Mondrian’s Neo-Plasticism to that of the Internet: as a space where the micro and macro can exchange, refer to and switch places with one another. What I didn’t get at that time, was what is it about white that allows it to traverse multiple perceptions, and as a result, exist outside of convention? It’s undifferentiated! Or to put it differently, it has no distinguishing characteristics. White, is just there, and that’s it. You see it, but you’re not conscious of it, which in terms of art, for me, at this moment means, it is there precisely for its ability to seem absent.

How has this absence affected the work I’m currently making? For starters, I’ve been building multiple artworks at once, something I’ve previously never done. I am also returning to a simpler design, since with the paper being “just there,” so too is the pattern. What is not “just there” is the color: the lines and bands that make up the painting, which is now essentially the structure, in true three-dimension.

For those of you who know me well, this distinction to have painting be a structure, and not always by being an object, is a big deal. It is the reason why I started my art with paper: to show a 2-D material as a third. And hopefully, by working with different types, contribute to that other network, of arts and artists, forever exchanging ideas and traversing perception.
